Low Income Tax Clinic (Wheaton)

Prairie State Legal Services, Inc.

Can be done anywhere

The Low Income Tax Clinic provides free legal advice and representation in tax controversies to low-income individuals.

Critical issues our clients face include denial of anti-poverty credits (ex. Earned Income Tax Credit), wage and benefit garnishments, tax problems stemming from identity theft, tax problems related to domestic abuse, worker misclassification, and deceptive tax schemes. The Clinic assists clients through litigation (primarily in the US Tax Court), administrative advocacy before the IRS and Illinois Department of Revenue, and, where appropriate and permitted, systemic advocacy outside the legal process.

The Clinic is looking for volunteer assistance from attorneys and accountants to help with its significant caseload. Opportunities are diverse and range from discrete problems (tax preparation and certain collection issues) requiring a small investment to more complex problems (deficiency or refund litigation) requiring substantial investment on the part of volunteers.
