You have a right to a lawyer while during removal proceedings. But the government will not appoint you a free lawyer in your removal case.
When you receive the notice to appear or attend court, the court should provide you with a list of free or low-cost legal services. These organizations provide free or low cost legal services. But they do not have many lawyers, and are not able to take every case. You may need to hire a private immigration attorney to represent you in your case.
If you hire a lawyer for your removal case
When preparing to speak with an immigration lawyer, it is helpful to bring with you a certified disposition for all of your criminal arrests. This is an official, stamped court copy of the judge’s final decision in your criminal case.
To get your certified disposition, you will need to contact the circuit clerk in the county where the crime happened.
If possible, you should also bring a copy of your RAP sheet.
