Women who are pregnant can call a counselor or adoption agency for help with giving their child for adoption. Most agencies will allow women to start the adoption process at any point in the pregnancy, including after they have given birth. A counselor from the agency will help you understand the process. Any interaction between the birth parents and adoption agency should be private. [linkto: Adoption Law Fact Sheet]
It is important to remember the following:
- The adoption is not legal until the papers have been signed after the birth; and
- You must wait at least 72 hours after giving birth to sign the papers that make the adoption plan legal and permanent. However, if you are not ready, you can take as much time as you need to make your final decision.
