Special programs are available for members of the military who have student loans. During active duty, war, national emergency, or while serving in the National Guard, deferment should be available for Direct, FFEL and Perkins Loans. Deferment is a grace period when you don't have to make payments on your loans. If you are on active duty, you should also qualify for a 180-day deferment period after demobilization.
For more information about special deferment for military service members and forms, go to the Federal Student Aid website or the National Consumer Law Center's website on Special Programs for Military.
