The Office of the State Appellate Defender can answer questions about sealing and expunging records. They cannot represent you in court. You may call toll-free (866) 787-1776 in Chicago or (866) 431-4907 Statewide, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also find out more about limited scope representation where an attorney helps you with your paperwork, but you go to court on your own.
If you live in Cook County, there are three help desks you can visit to get help from a lawyer:
- Chicago: Daley Center, 50 W. Washington, Chicago, IL, Room 1006. Hours: Monday - Thursday, 9 AM - 12 PM; Thursday 1 PM - 4 PM
- Markham: Markham Courthouse, 16501 Kedzie Ave, Markham, IL, Room 102J. Hours: Wednesdays 10 AM - 2 PM.
- Skokie: Skokie Courthouse, 5600 Old Orchard Road, Skokie, IL, Room 136. Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 AM - 12 PM.
If you were arrested by the Chicago Police Department, you must bring a current RAP sheet with you.
You can also attend the Cook County Expungement Summit held each year in early June. See the flyer for more info about the 2018 event.
