Description
SIJS is a special form of immigration relief available to undocumented youth who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by one or both parents, including through the death of a parent. Falling at the intersection of immigration and family law, these cases are often unfamiliar to practitioners and the public. CVLS attorneys Rob Zielinski and Rebekah Rashidfarokhi will give an overview of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), focusing on Allocation of Parental Responsibilities (APR) cases in Cook County. This seminar is for attorneys interested in knowing more about SIJS for minors under the age of 18 living with a parent, including who is eligible; where, when, and how to file; and tips on best practices in this area.
CVLS has a pressing need for volunteers on these cases, and a waiting list of clients in need of help. All cases are uncontested, and last approximately 3-6 months. Spanish speakers, or attorneys willing to utilize interpreting services, are greatly needed. All participants are encouraged to consider taking a case, and a current case list will be provided. No experience is needed, and all volunteers will be provided with support and supervision from CVLS staff.
This seminar will be held remotely via Zoom, with CLE provided. Attendees will receive login instructions upon registration.
