Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY The Managing Attorney serves as a senior level legal and policy expert, providing strategic guidance, technical assistance, and policy analysis across multiple program areas. This role supports organizational leadership by interpreting complex legal issues impacting survivors of gender-based violence, contributing to the development and delivery of policy initiatives, advising on program implementation within the gender-based violence sector, and ensuring provider program compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The Managing Attorney also plays a key role in capacity building through training, technical assistance, and case or program oversight.
RESPONSIBILITIES • Manage relationships with outside counsel and oversee legal strategy for The Network, ensuring that all legal strategy aligns with The Network’s mission • Supervise the provision of technical assistance to Network membership organizations— including legal advice, support, brief services and, if needed, full representation to survivors of gender-based violence & service providers • Advise The Network and its partnership organizations on compliance with applicable laws and regulations • Support executive leadership in conducing organizational risk assessments and mitigation • Contribute to the development of proposals to support programs within their portfolio • Research, analyze and advise on legal system advocacy issues related to survivors of genderbased violence and engage in policy advocacy in support of best practices for survivors • Review legislative drafts and policy proposals for legal compliance and consistency • Consult with executive leadership regarding legal and law-related issues • Develop, coordinate, and conduct training to community partners and allied groups on legal issues that affect survivors • Monitor and advise on legal developments and requirements applicable to the administration of nonprofit organizations in the Network’s community of providers • Provide supervision to the Housing Advocacy department • Special Projects: In alignment with its mission, The Network often initiates special projects to support systems change advocacy, including the development of public policy, training programs, prevention and intervention services, and quality assurance mechanisms
Qualifications
• Licensed attorney in Illinois or eligible for admission through reciprocity • Ideal candidates will have 10 years of experience working with individuals in crisis, including survivors of gender-based violence or people experiencing housing instability • Ideal candidate will have 10 years of relevant experience practicing as an attorney • Knowledge of service and housing needs of survivors of gender-based violence preferred • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; proficiency in Spanish preferred • Ability to work independently • Ability to effectively establish and maintain working relationships with peers and constituents • 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training required within 3 months of employment. This can be obtained through The Network at no cost for staff. • Familiarity with Odyssey and Cook County court systems preferred • Familiarity with LegalServer preferred
Pay scale and benefits
Salary Range: $110,000-$115,000
