Job Description
LCBH is currently hiring Staff Attorneys to deliver a range of legal services in eviction court, including brief advice, negotiation, and eviction defense litigation to eligible clients through the Cook County Legal Aid for Housing and Debt Early Resolution Program (ERP) and the City of Chicago’s Extended Tenant Counsel (ETC) Program. These are full-time, exempt positions.
Duties include
- Provide legal advice, brief services, and extended representation to renters.
- Coordinate with rental assistance programs, supportive services, mediation, and other programs to connect renters with resources to help preserve housing.
- Exercise independent judgment in all aspects of litigation: intake interviews; charting case strategy; drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery; interviewing and preparing witnesses; and conducting discovery and investigation.
- Defend renters in eviction court in both bench and jury trials.
- Participate in community legal education projects.
Qualifications
Qualifications include
- Affinity for legal aid work and commitment to justice for those impacted by eviction and poor housing conditions.
- Ideal candidate will have participated in a law school clinic or internships with legal aid organizations, or similar work that builds judgment in working with individuals in crisis.
- Ability to communicate with clients in a language other than English is a plus.
Pay scale and benefits
LCBH staff are represented by the National Organization of Legal Services Workers (UAW-Local 2320). Compensation and benefits are covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Starting salary for 2025 graduates is $66,268.80 , with increases based on experience. Bilingual attorneys are eligible for an additional stipend. LCBH offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental/vision, 401k retirement plan with LCBH contribution, and approximately 19 paid holidays.
