Getting a probationary driver's license

A probationary driver's license allows a person who has a suspended license, to be able to legally drive during the suspension. A probationary license can only be issued in certain situations.

Am I eligible for a probationary license?

There are several requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for a probationary license:

  • You must be at least 21 years old;
  • You must be suspended for 3 months or less;
  • Your suspension must be for 3 moving violations within 1 year;
  • You must have a driver's license that is not expired; and
  • You must attend an 8 hour defensive driving class.

You cannot get a probationary license if:

  • You have had your license suspended or revoked within the past 7 years; or
  • Your suspension is for longer than 3 months.

How do I apply for this license?

You will have to go through an application process. You will have to pay the $8 probationary license fee and any other needed fees.

To begin the application process, contact the Special License and Re-Examination Unit of the Secretary of State's office. You can reach them at 217-782-2720.

Is a probationary license the same thing as a hardship license?

No. A hardship license has different eligibility requirements and requires you to appear at a hearing. It is issued for limited driving for employment, educational or medical care for you or a household member, and for your alcohol treatment. Learn more about hardship licenses.
