Champaign housing restrictions for people with criminal records

In general, landlords can't discriminate when renting out units. Those reasons include race, gender, or disability. But, there are other reasons a landlord can use to discriminate. A landlord can ask about your income and refuse to rent to you if it is below a certain amount. They can also ask you about your rental history. So, they can reach out to your former landlords and find out if you've been a good tenant.

Laws in Champaign, IL allow landlords to deny housing to someone if they were convicted and sentenced to jail for:

  • Forcible felonies, or
  • Drug felonies for sale, manufacture, or delivery of illegal drugs.

If the person has been out of jail for 2 years and hasn't had another conviction for those crimes, the landlord can't deny them based on their conviction.
