Law students and recent graduates help ILAO reduce the justice gap. We offer remote opportunities to draft, research, and edit legal content under the supervision of licensed attorneys who are professional legal editors. Our interns and fellows benefit from scheduling flexibility and behind-the-scenes insights into the unique role ILAO plays in the legal aid community.

Interns and fellows must be enrolled in or have recently graduated from an ABA-approved J.D. program. Funding partners may have additional requirements for students and recent graduates.

Project-based volunteers (unpaid)

We offer single-project volunteer opportunities for law students. Projects are unpaid and available year-round. They generally involve helping one of our legal content managers review all articles on a particular topic. No prior experience in a content area is required.

Submit your project-based volunteer application, and we’ll reach out if we have a project that might fit.

Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Interns & Fellows

ILAO is proud to participate in PILI’s Law Student Internship and Graduate Fellowship Programs. Apply for these roles in PILI’s online application system.

Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference (MPILCC) opportunities

ILAO attends MPILCC, the largest Midwestern public interest job fair. Visit MPILCC for current application information.

Students applying through MPILCC usually obtain law school funding or external scholarships for their internships. We may be able to work with students on funding but request that interns apply for outside resources first.

Externships for law school credit

ILAO hosts law students who receive academic credit for their work. Apply through the law school's externship program.
