Law students support ILAO's legal information work through research, drafting, and editing. All student work is supervised by Illinois-licensed lawyers who are experienced legal editors with backgrounds in legal aid practice.

Content review events

Current JD and LLM students may participate in remote content review volunteer events hosted through Illinois law schools. These events must be approved by the law school’s public interest or pro bono coordinator and include a required group video call. Projects assigned at the event have a set deadline. Students may contact ILAO lawyers by email with questions during the project.

To schedule a remote content review event, ask the law school to contact ILAO.

Interns and fellows

Current JD students who live in Illinois and attend Illinois law schools may join ILAO through:

  • Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) internships, applied for through PILI,
  • Externships for academic credit, arranged through participating law schools,
  • Internships with external funding, when posted on law school job boards, and
  • Paid ILAO internships, when posted on law school job boards.

We also participate in PILI Graduate Fellowship Programs for law students sponsored by law firms.

Opportunities are posted through PILI or law school job boards when available. Application instructions are included in each posting. ILAO does not accept or review unsolicited applications for law student positions.
