When someone dies, a family member or another adult must claim the body within 72 hours. Sometimes your loved one who died may have plans in place, such as pre-paid funeral arrangements. Other times, you may need to consider what resources are available to help, such as life insurance, veterans’ benefits, or other resources.

If your loved one received assistance from the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), such as through TANF or Medicaid, the department may help reimburse funeral expenses. General Assistance may also be able to help. Learn how to apply for funeral and burial costs from IDHS.
