Job Description

The Deportation Defense Organizer leads TRP’s community protection and defense work. In coordination with the IJ team and partner organizations, the Deportation Defense Organizer designs and implements TRP’s rapid response work, organizes participatory deportation defense campaigns, and participates in all immigrant justice campaigns.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as first point of contact for immigration enforcement actions threatening families and communities, including deportation or ICE raid alerts and determines course of action following alert
  • Works in partnership with other organizations to build deportation defense rapid response infrastructure to protect families and communities
  • Convenes community and organizational partners
  • Attends and represents TRP at interagency and community meetings and roundtables
  • Builds relationships with local schools, churches, and neighborhood institutions to support deportation defense work
  • Develops and leads participatory deportation defense campaigns including for individual deportation cases.
  • Actively participate in public education workshops regarding important immigration issues facing the community.
  • Assist with implementation of communications and media strategy related to deportation defense
  • Must keep current of changes in immigration law and procedures.
  • Cultivate, manage, and expand relationships with participants, leaders and TRP partner institutions to promote and further TRP’s organizational mission.
  • Maintain required job skills and core professional competencies.
  • Attend and participate in required educational programs and staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Performance Measures

  • Successful development and implementation of rapid response strategy
  • Successful development and implementation of deportation defense campaigns and actions including rapid response, ICE check-ins, court hearings, press conferences and other public events
  • Number of community and inter-organizational convenings
  • Attendance and active participation at partner meetings

Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.
  • Experience in working with immigrant communities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant justice.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social, faith, economic and racial/ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office and Internet required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or significant track record working within immigrant communities as it relates to community organizing.

Special Working Conditions and Demands

  • On-site work schedule: as needed, and no less than 3 days per week.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours; some evenings and weekends required.
    • Access to a car, valid driver’s license and insurance, and ability to travel throughout the state.

Position Classification and Salary Full-Time, Exempt, $60,000 - $70,000 annually
