In Illinois, a divorce is called a “dissolution of marriage.” This process ends a marriage or civil union. The steps and forms involved can differ depending on whether there are children in the marriage.
In a divorce with children:
- The spouses have at least one biological or adopted child together under the age of 18;
- One spouse is currently pregnant; or
- The spouses have at least one child together who is over the age of 18 and needs financial support to attend school or due to a disability.
When divorcing with children, the process often involves more forms and steps than a divorce without kids.
