In Illinois, housing discrimination laws protect people involved in real estate transactions. This includes:
- Looking for housing,
- Applying for housing,
- Renting a home, and
- Buying residential property, like a house, condominium, or mobile home.
These laws apply to discrimination based on actual and perceived characteristics. A person can violate the law by treating someone differently because:
- The person has a protected characteristic, or
- The person is believed to have a protected characteristic.
Report problems with housing discrimination by filing a complaint with the Illinois Department of Human Rights. The complaint must be filed within one year (365 days) of the last alleged discriminatory act.
