The landlord
in charge of a public housing building must have good cause for deciding not to renew a tenant ’s lease. This is the same as if they wanted to evict the tenant.Good cause can include criminal activity. Every year, the landlord will do a criminal background check on everyone in the building that is over the age of 18. They may decide not to renew the lease if they find there has been criminal activity.
Other grounds for good cause include:
- Not paying on time,
- Lying on your application,
- Not accepting changes to the lease, or
- Not following the rules in the lease.
However, if your lease is not renewed you should have the option to file a complaint filing an eviction.
or request a hearing . Note that the owner needs to also follow the law forWorried about doing this on your own? You may be able to get free legal help.
