Illinois Legal Aid Online's Young Professionals Board (YPB) is an organized group of up-and-coming leaders who engage in networking, socializing, and fundraising in support of our mission to use technology in innovative ways to increase access to justice for lower-income Illinois residents.

Jack O'Connor, Co-Chair

Jack O'Connor is an associate at Sugar Felsenthal Grais & Hammer LLP, whose practice concentrates on representing corporate clients in complex reorganization + bankruptcy proceedings, + counseling businesses in all phases of their development + operations. A member of the YPB since 2011, Jack is also a recreational endurance athlete + homebrewer. He lives in the western suburbs with his family.

Andrew is an Associate at DLA Piper, where he represented clients in both state and federal courts, including adversary proceedings in bankruptcy court, in a variety of disputes including product liability, securities, and class action litigation. Before joining DLA Piper, he served as a Special Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago in the Federal Civil Rights Litigation division.
Michael Gibbons, Social Committee Co-Chair
Mike Gibbons is Director of Business Development at TransPerfect Legal Solutions, where he oversees litigation + language support services for AmLaw 200 Law Firms + Fortune 500 companies. He has gained experience working on a variety of pro bono cases and joined Illinois Legal Aid Online in 2015, and was named Social Committee Co-Chair in 2016. A Chicago native, he graduated University of Iowa.

Alyse Mauro is a Litigation Paralegal in the Intellectual Property Practice Group at McDermott Will & Emery, where she is also a member of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. Before joining McDermott Will & Emery, Alyse was a Senior Litigation Paralegal at Frommer Lawrence & Haug in New York. Alyse is passionate about giving back and volunteers her time to help those in need as often as she can.
Jacob Gilbert, Membership Committee Co-Chair

Jacob Gilbert is a graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law. After working for a plaintiffs’ employment law firm, and for Illinois Legal Aid Online, Jacob joined the Consumer Fraud Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General, where he works on all manner of fraud investigations and civil prosecutions. Jacob spends most of his spare time with his progeny, occasionally getting some running and tennis in.
Joseph Gartner, Board Liaison
Joseph is an Associate at UpRight Law. As a civil rights attorney, he focuses his practice on fair housing, employment, and police misconduct. He also consults with condo boards on best practices. Joseph holds degrees from John Marshall Law School and Western Michigan University.

Garrett Thomas is a criminal defense + civil rights attorney. He represents clients in all phases of criminal cases and emphasizes trial advocacy. A Georgetown Law graduate, Garrett’s practice is focused primarily on helping people navigate the broken criminal justice system. Garrett also works with the Criminal Defense Program at Cabrini Green Legal Aid.

Marie serves as an Editor of the Illinois State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Newsletter and as Co-Chair of the Communications Committee of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois. She is a 2016 graduate of The John Marshall Law School.

Kyle Shires is an associate in the Chicago office of Sidley Austin and a member of the Corporate group. His practice focuses on complex business transactions, including mergers and acquisitions and private equity investments, as well as general corporate governance and securities compliance matters. Prior to joining the firm, Kyle completed a PILI fellowship at Illinois Legal Aid Online.

Kristina Hendricks is an intellectual property partner in Kirkland's Chicago office with a primary focus on patent litigation. Kristina has substantial experience litigating cases in a variety of technology areas, including both electronics hardware and software. Kristina has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas, and a J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
