If your family or loved one has been taken by immigration officials, you can use this information to find out where they are being held by immigration officials. You can also contact an immigration lawyer for help.

Note: Illinois does not have immigration detention facilities. People arrested and detained by ICE will be detained outside of Illinois.

Gather the detained person’s information

The below information is needed about the detainee:

  • Their first and last name,
  • The country where they were born,
  • Their date of birth, or
  • Their 9-digit USCIS number (also known as an A-number, or alien number), if known.
Go to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) website

Enter the detainee's information in ICE’s Online Locator System. The system should say which detention facility the detainee is located in. Note that you cannot search for anyone under the age of 18 in this system.

If the detainee cannot be found, their location may not be in ICE’s system yet. Wait at least 24 hours after the arrest and check again. Check a second time after 48 hours. If the person still can’t be found, go to the next step.

Contact the detained person’s consulate for help

The detained person’s consulate may be able to help. The Consulate contact information for Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Poland, El Salvador, China, India, and Honduras is below. You can find information about additional consulates in Chicago on the Chicago Consular Corp website.
