Vehicle emissions testing

In Illinois, you may need to get your car’s emissions tested. If you don’t, you could face a fine. This article explains who needs to test their car, where they can do it, and what happens if you don’t test. You can also learn more about the testing process and find answers to common questions on the Illinois Air Team’s website.

Do I need to test my car?

You must take an emissions test for your car if it is more than 4 years old and gas-powered. You cannot renew your car’s registration if you do not take an emissions test.

The rule does not apply to diesel trucks and completely electric vehicles. Motorcycles and antique vehicles (model year before 1967) are also exempt. If your vehicle is registered outside of Illinois, you are also exempt. For a full list of excluded vehicles, see 625 ILCS 5/13C-15(a)(6). You can also visit the Illinois Air Team’s “Does my vehicle need to be tested?” page to learn more.

Some vehicles are exempt based on their use and location. You must apply for these exemptions. This includes vehicles used exclusively for sporting events or parades. It also includes vehicles located and primarily used outside of the Illinois vehicle emissions testing area. You can view more information and apply for one of these exemptions on the Illinois Air Team website

When you register your car, you should get a test notice that tells you what to do. Your emissions test will be valid for 2 years after the test. Often, the state likes to test even-year model cars on even years. For example, a 2010 Toyota Prius will be tested in 2020, and a 2013 Ford F-150 will be tested in 2021. If you are unsure whether your vehicle needs testing, you can use this tool to check if it is due for a test.

How can I test my car?

You will need to go to a testing station. These are all over Illinois. Find the testing station that is closest to you. In Chicago, you can also use one of three self-service emissions testing kiosks. The Illinois Air Team also has mobile testing units that travel to different communities, making it easier for drivers to get their emissions test done nearby.

What will this cost me?

The mandatory emissions test is free. If your car fails inspection, you’ll need to pay for repairs to pass. Once you pass, you can renew your registration.

You can also request a voluntary test for $20 at any time, such as to check your vehicle’s emissions before selling it, after repairs, or for peace of mind.

What if I can't afford repairs?

If your vehicle fails an emissions test and you cannot afford repairs, you can apply for an economic hardship extension

What if I don’t have my car tested?

If you don’t complete the required emissions test, you won’t be able to renew your vehicle registration until the test is done.

If you are pulled over while driving with expired registration, you may be fined at least $50 if it has been expired for less than 60 days and at least $300 if it has been expired for more than 60 days.

What if my vehicle fails the emissions test after getting repairs?

If your vehicle has been tested at least twice, has been repaired, and still fails to comply with emissions inspection standards, you may qualify for a repair waiver.
