Court & Hearings

AI tools (artificial intelligence tools) like ChatGPT can help people organize their thoughts and write a clear first draft. This may be useful for letters, personal statements, or other documents in a legal process. The AI tool does not replace legal advice or court instructions. The person using the AI tool is always responsible for reviewing, editing, and deciding what to submit.
Before using an AI tool, think about the purpose of your message or document. Is it a letter to your landlord
? A summary of your situation? An explanation of why you missed court that you will file in a motion to ask for another court date?Write down the key points you want to include.
Type a request into the AI tool, such as:
- “Help me outline a letter explaining my situation to the landlord ,”
- “Can you organize these ideas into a clear summary?” or
- “Does this explanation of why I missed court make sense?”
You can also paste your notes and say: “Please organize this into a first draft that sounds respectful and clear.”
Read the AI tool’s response closely. Make sure all information is correct. Fix any mistakes, and delete anything that doesn’t apply to your situation. If the tool adds legal terms, check whether they are used correctly.
Many legal messages can become public:
- Most types of court records are public by default, and
- Emails, texts, or letters about a legal situation may eventually be filed in court.
Before sharing or filing the document, remove names, addresses, or personal details unless they are required. This is especially important if you are discussing children or sensitive information.
After editing the draft, save it in your own words. You may want to ask a trusted person or lawyer
to review your writing before sharing it or filing it in court.Worried about doing this on your own? You may be able to get free legal help.
