At some point, either parent may want to change or end child support payments. Child support payments cannot be changed without going to court first.
The parent can ask a judge to change the payments if there has been a “substantial change in circumstances” since the last child support order. A substantial change means a big change, such as a change in employment or ability to make money, but may also include the birth of other children which impacts the availability of resources. The paying parent would have to provide testimony and documentation of financial status, expenses, and income to the judge when asking for reduced child support.
