Cyberbullying is a form of bullying. Cyberbullies use technology or electronic communication to bully people. 

Cyberbullying includes:

• Bullying someone through instant messages or internet communications,
• Pretending to be another person on the internet,
• Posting information on an electronic platform that people can see, and
• Distributing a fake copy of the voice, image, or likeness of a person.

There are many signs that a person is being cyberbullied. These include changes in sleeping, eating, and schoolwork. Emotional signs include depression, anxiety, aggression, and shyness. Other signs include secrecy about using devices and prolonged device use. 

As with bullying, schools are required to have policies on cyberbullying in Illinois. Schools must have a cyberbullying reporting procedure that is accessible to students and parents. If cyberbullying is reported, schools must investigate. Reports must be reviewed within ten days. Schools must notify parents or guardians of students involved in reports of bullying within 24 hours.

Some forms of bullying, like harassment or threats, can be crimes. If a crime has been committed, a person can contact law enforcement. To file a police report, use the non-emergency number.

The non-emergency number for Chicago is 311. Non-emergency numbers for other areas are online. 

The police should be called when there is an immediate threat of physical harm. If cyberbullying creates this possibility, then it may be appropriate to contact the police. If someone is unsure if an incident requires law enforcement intervention, they can always ask to file a police report. 

There may be steps students can take to protect themselves from cyberbullying, which include:

• Being careful about what they post online, 
• Maintaining online privacy to the extent possible, 
• Securing their passwords and accounts, and
• Speaking to parents and guardians about scary or threatening messages.

It is also a good idea for parents and guardians to monitor the student’s internet usage. All of these things can prevent students from being harmed online, too.
