Filing a petition for executive clemency is free but you will still have to pay for documents, such as Record of Arrests and Prosecutions (RAP) sheets, statewide criminal history reports, and certified court dispositions. You do not have to have a lawyer represent you in a petition for executive clemency, but having one is always helpful.
For a list of legal service providers who may be able to help you with your petition for clemency, see Office of the State Appellate Defender's website.
Note: The information above only applies to clemency for state crimes in Illinois. For information on clemency for federal crimes, visit the US Pardon Attorney's website. For information on other state crimes, contact your state government website.
