When you leave a job, you should always apply for unemployment benefits, no matter why you became unemployed. You should apply for unemployment benefits if:
- You were laid off;
- You were fired; or
- You voluntarily quit.
It is important to apply right after your last day on the job because benefits are paid from the date you turn in your application. Even if you think you might not get unemployment benefits you should still apply.
Amount of unemployment benefits
The amount you may receive varies depending on how much you were being paid. The minimum amount of benefits for an individual is $51 a week and the maximum is $426 per week. If your spouse doesn't work and you are applying for unemployment benefits, you can receive up to $507 per week, and up to $580 a week with dependent children. However, your benefits depend on your specific circumstances.
